“I Dream in Kaleidoscopes” anniversary

The 9th June marked the one year anniversary of my first published story, “I Dream in Kaleidoscopes”, published back in 2021 on the site 365 Tomorrows. It marks a year since I started to put out more written pieces, experimenting with more flash fiction and 100-word stories. This definitely was the leaping off point for me in terms of gaining more confidence, labelling myself as a “writer”, and starting to experiment with my written voice as well.

“I Dream in Kaleidoscopes” is a short dystopian piece, showing a world where people can be voluntarily signed up for a behaviour-altering headset by someone as close as a friend or spouse. These neuro-signalling head-pieces have worn down humanity’s ability to complain and criticise, carving out a clear hierarchy in society between those who have been forced to wear one by law, and those who haven’t. And to think, this tale came from a line I said during an argument, about not being allowed to process feelings like anger and frustration. It’s weird where inspiration for stories can turn up.
