A Brand New Year

Hi, folks.

It’s been way too long since I last updated the blog side of things on this site. Since September, I’ve been trying to ease off socials more and focus on writing, though all that’s happened is I’ve increased both writing and exposure to socials. 2025 marks a new year and thus new resolutions, my main being:

  • Be kinder to myself with regards to breaks, and listening to my body more
  • Writing for a set amount of time and no less, each time
  • Ignoring the need to research during a writing session, which ultimately leads down an Internet wormhole
  • Take frequent breaks from social media

These might seem like fairly basic thoughts that most writers should adhere to, but it’s taken 4.5 years of drafting, self-publishing, promoting, submissions, rejections, acceptances and publications (and then more stress and self-punishing thoughts) to cobble these together in a moment of realisation that is long, long overdue. I started Threads in November maybe, I can’t remember, in the hopes of connecting with more writers beyond Instagram, and while it has expanded my social circle greatly, it is another distraction requiring attention when writing needs done.

The resolution for ignoring the Internet more came from my friend and fellow writer H.R Parker, who does not allow herself to search for anything during writing sessions, in a bid to stay focused. I thought this was a great idea and have been trying this more myself during recent writing stints, finding my focus stays sharper and more words end up on the page.

As always, taking more breaks should always be on the list, and not just for writers. The working world is bullshit, with people being driven into fits of stress and/or physical exhaustion, potentially leading to even worse outcomes down the line through continued exposure. Mental health is a massive part of my life, suffering from anxiety since my teens, and depression since secondary school. Taking frequent breaks throughout the week, doing things you love, and finding time to unwind either with company or solo, with good food and drink is also important to nourish the body and mind. Hell, even just reading a book will do your mind and body wonders. Commuting constantly does not. Think about it.

In terms of progress, my novel is nearing the 3rd act. Pray for me. It’s picking up momentum, and I’m aiming for a March, 2025 finish. In publishing news, one of my short stories is seeing publication in a magazine in the next week, while another is appearing on the radio in Australia in early February. Keep an eye out on social media for updates, but remember to take it easy on socials as well.

It’s a new year, and a chance for new beginnings. Say no to fascism, say no to the 9-to-5, and say no to bad writing habits.

All the best for 2025.
